The USMLE Exam Preparation: A Complete Guide

The USMLE exam is the most important examination for IMGs (international medical graduates) dreaming of a medical career in the USA. It assesses the overall theoretical and clinical prowess of the candidates.

What is the USMLE Exam

USMLE is short for United States Medical Licensing Examination, which is conducted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). It opens doors to a medical career beyond borders.

USMLE Exam Format

The USMLE exam consists of three steps, each of which evaluates various aspects of the candidate’s proficiency in practicing medicine. The USMLE Step 1 evaluates the ability of students to apply basic science to medical situations.

The USMLE Step 2 is further divided into two parts: clinical knowledge (CK) and clinical skills (CS). Both of them test specific aspects of clinical experience.

The USMLE Step 3 tests the skills of students in real-life medical scenarios.

Each of these steps can only be taken in a sequence, as only after passing one of the exams can one take the subsequent ones.
