The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) is a three-part examination that every medical aspirant must take to gain licensure to practice medicine in the USA.
It is jointly conducted by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) in order to ensure the medical professionals satisfy the minimum theoretical and clinical expertise required to practice medicine in the US.
USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 Exam Format and Eligibility
The first part of the exam is called USMLE Step 1, which is an 8-hour-long exam divided into 7 blocks of 1-hour exams. These exams evaluate candidates’ proficiency with basic principles of medical sciences like anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.
The second part of the USMLE exam is called USMLE Step 2 CK. This exam evaluates clinical knowledge and its application through a series of 8 blocks of 1-hour exams, culminating in an overall duration of 9 hours.
The first two steps can be taken in any order, although it is recommended to take the second exam after the first one. Due to the clinical nature of the exam, it is strongly suggested to take the USMLE Step 2 exam after completing the clinical rotation.
To be eligible for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
- Should be a medical student enrolled in, or a graduate of, a US or Canadian medical school programme. Which can be led into an MD accredited by the LCME
- Should be a medical student enrolled in, or a graduate of, a US medical school programme. Which can be led into a DO accredited by the COCA
- Should be a medical student enrolled in, or a graduate of, a medical school outside of the US and Canada listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools
USMLE Step 3 Exam Format and Eligibility Criteria
The USMLE Step 3 is a 2-day exam that intends to assess the ability to manage independently with a heightened focus on testing internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, OB-GYN, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.
To be eligible for the USMLE Step 3, a candidate must satisfy the following criteria:
- Must have passing scores in Step 1 and Step 2
- An MD degree or equivalent degree as mentioned in the eligibility criteria of Step 1 and Step
- Additionally, meet all the requirements listed in the USMLE bulletin of information.
